If you’re like me and didn’t exactly pay attention to the name on the briefcase that appeared on said briefcase might have gone over your head. Well according to the X-Men: Apocalypse commentary Nathaniel Essex aka Mr. Sinister will make his cinematic debut in Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine film.
Just in cast you haven’t heard the name Mr. Sinister before, he first debuted in Uncanny X-Men #221 (1987) and was created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silverstri. Before he became Mr. Sinister he was Nathaniel Essex who was born in Victorian England and became obsessed with Charles Darwin theories on evolution and thanks to Apocalypse he became Mr. Sinister. Being completely honest here Mr. Sinister is one of my favorite X-Men villains and I’m excited that he’s finally debuting on the big screen with Wolverine III. Given that the X-Men films have largely centered around Magneto, I’m glad that this film continues the trend of broadening the use of villains that X-Men First Class started in 2011.
The Fox X-Men films haven’t exactly been 1 to 1 to their source material since debuting in 2000, but despite that most of the characters are recognizable when they speak at least. Going into this film I don’t expect Mr. Sinister to look like his comic book counterpart. Similarly to Apocalypse, I fully expect a design that fits within the universe that Bryan Singer established, but with call backs to roots namely the black star at center of Sinester’s forehead and hopefully some sort of call back to his “cape” which from my perspective are Sinisters most iconic aspects of his first design. Going forward Nathaniel Essex most likely wont be from Victorian England, but that doesn’t mean he still can’t have a deep admiration for Charles Darwin, and of course since this is a Wolverine movie that Essex will be apart of the, the weird connection he has with Cyclops and Jean-Grey will most likely not be factored into whatever his motivation ends up being.
More than likely Sinister interests will focus on Logan himself, and to be honest if Sinister comes off as extremely unsettling and conducts experiments that will make movie goers skin crawl I would be satisfied with that. The only real question I have is, how far will the push the envelope with Mr. Sinister since this Wolverine film will have a R rating when it’s released, I don’t have an answer nor theory for that but I’m excited for what the filmmakers have in store for Mr.Sinister.
