We arrive at a crossroads for everyone’s favorite band of mutants, with Deadpool breaking box office records, meanwhile X-Men: Apocalypse sits at 48% on the tomato meter months after it’s release. With Logan being Hugh Jackman’s last performance as Wolverine, where does Fox take their franchise next?
Let’s just talk about the element in the room okay? If you talk to most comic fans and even casual movie goers, the general opinion is that the X-Men need to be folded into the MCU. Being perfectly honest and showing my bias, but I would prefer not to have the X-Men part of the MCU at all. Would it be cool to see the Avengers, the Inhumans, and the X-Men fighting side by side against the hordes of Thanos in Infinity War but that would mean less X-Men films over time.
At this time Marvel Films has two films per year and rumors of potentially releasing three to four movies per year sounds good on paper but I’m willing to wager that Marvel would want to focus on their own franchises and put the X-Men on the back burner. At least if the X-Men stay apart of Fox fans are promised an X-Men centered movie every two years, if not at least one per year. So in short I’m against the popular opinion that the X-Men should be apart of the MCU.
From my view, X-Men: Days of Futures Past softly rebooted the franchised, but now we’re getting rumors that the next X-Men film might be The Dark Phoenix Saga Part II and the last time Fox made the Dark Phoenix Saga it lead to half the cast being killed off and almost killed the X-Men franchise (Wolverine: Origins was the knife twist in the coffin), yet it seems that people are jumping to conclusion that this means the X-Men need to be rebooted. I understand that X-Men: Apocalypse wasn’t the biggest hit either critically or box office wise but I believe it’s a bit to early to call this one.
Deadpool changed the game for the Fox that’s for sure but as much as I love the shared universe that Marvel has built I don’t believe everyone should try and mimic it and adapt to previously established universes. Let Deadpool be in his own comical bubble with references to any era of X-Men the writers want to choose from because it goes well with what people enjoyed about Deadpool. As for the mainline X-Men films, let them be the flagship and not worry about what other mutant movies do.
What are your thoughts on the status of the X-Men series? Should Fox just partner up with Disney and give the majority what they want? Or should Fox stay the course and tell their own tapestry? Let me know in the comments below!
