Last week it was announced that Ben Affleck won’t be directing the upcoming Batman solo film and of course when any negative news pertains to the future of the DC films, everybody is so quick to say that Warner Brothers should pull the plug. Well I’m here to tell you that they shouldn’t and everything is fine.
I understand that many fans of Ben Affleck’s directing style and were looking forward to seeing what he could do with a big budget film like this. I personally think it take a big person to sit down and understand that not everything can be done with one person holding most of the responsibility. Plus I’m pretty confident that Affleck’s “vision” will shine through regardless if he’s directing it or not. Plus it allows him to focus on the acting portion and give us another great Bruce Wayne/Batman performance.
Another big criticism lately that I’ve seen is that DC has no clear vision and they need someone like Kevin Feige to give the universe that unifying feeling. Well I got news for you, but Warner Brothers does have a vision for it’s characters and it was began with Zach Synder and Man of Steel. You may not like Snyder’s more melancholy approach to these beloved characters and how they don’t fit what’s been established before. As a fan of comics myself I don’t want to see the exact same story that I read on a comic, put onto the big screen beat for beat. When I go see a comic book film give me references that I’ll chuckle and drop my jaw at but also push the characters into different directions occasionally. Seeing Superman doubt himself as this savior figure is absolutely genius in my mind, was it properly executed? That’s up for debate, and a debate I’m willing to have with rational people.
Finally while Suicide Squad was a mess, one can’t argue the sheer talent that DC has behind these roles. Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck sold most audience members as Batman and Wonder Woman and I have absolute confidence Erza Miller, Ray Fisher and Jason Mamoa will bring that same level quality that’s already been established. Did the DC movie universe get off to a rough start? Absolutely no one is arguing that, however I see so much potential and I’m willing to believe that Warner Brothers saw their mistakes with Batman V. Superman and Suicide Squad and make both Wonder Woman and Justice League huge success. What are your thoughts on DC films? Let me know in the comments below.
