In stunning news Marvel and Hulu are partnering up to bring the streaming site a live action series based around some teenagers who discover their parents are super villains and decide to fight against them. A cult series that has been off and on since fall of 2004, it looks like Marvel might be expanding their cinematic universe outside of Netflix. Read further my speculation on this series on Hulu.
I think I have to preface this before going forward that I haven’t read much of the Runaways throughout their collected history. From my personal perspective, The Runaways always felt like a book that lived on it’s cult status and the hardcore fans that buy each new mini series centered around these beloved cast of characters. That’s not a bad thing at all and it only proves that despite the weird choice to host this upcoming live action adventure the fans will flock to at least check out the first season.
I’m not here to criticize the show in any fashion, but I have to question the choice of Hulu as the primary host for this brand new adventure. When it comes to Hulu as a streaming service I’m not sure that most of it’s viewers are there for the original content, but rather a use to catch up the previous nights worth of shows at their own leisure. While both Netflix and Amazon’s own original shows continue to tear up social media and reap the benefits, I have yet to hear any sort of buzz come from any of Hulu’s Originals that would make me as a want to subscribe. Perhaps The Runaways is a big push to make people recognize that Hulu is a force to be reckoned within the streaming service arena. It’s odd that a Marvel show won’t be on Netflix given the success of Daredevil and Jessica Jones so far. Perhaps this show might not be apart of the MCU, but one of the Runaways’ mother appears in the Doctor Strange prequel comic so right now it’s difficult to say.
