Listen, can you hear it? Well if you can’t then you might be soulless. Last year X-Men: Gold writer Marc Guggenheim teased a future wedding, but no names were given. If you’ve been following this series the announcement isn’t that surprising. This summer Kitty Pryde and Peter Rasputin officially tie the not. Is this the right move for these characters? Will this stagnate their relationship? Read further on for my thoughts on the recent nuptials.
Should Comic Characters Even Marry?
Marriages in comics fall in one of two camps. You either want your favorite characters to settle down and be happy. The other camp never wants marriage brought up and believe only Reed Richards and Sue Storm should be married. I lean towards the first camp if only because it makes me giddy with excitement of my favorite characters being truly happy. Marriage doesn’t make relationships boring or uninteresting, terrible creators do. Sure not every superhero is suited for holy matrimony, but that doesn’t others are not. A good writer will know how to make a married couple engaging despite the fact the romantic tension is gone.
Perfect Time For An X-Men Wedding
If you’ve been reading X-Men: Gold from the start, you can see that Guggenheim was pushing towards this. Yes both Kitty and Peter have an extensive and tragic history as a couple, and when you factor in that it’s hard to see why they would want to tie the not. I argue that given Kitty’s current role as leader of The X-Men with Peter by her side that she has grown as a character. She doesn’t feel like the X-Men’s little sister, but rather the mother hen of the team. That can’t really be said for Peter, but I love that he’s still devoted to her. While I would like this to just be a normal wedding, I’m pretty sure some mutant villain will find a way to try and interrupt the ceremony.
