Watchmen, a series that defined a generation of comic books. Considered by many to the pinnacle of superheroes, Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Over the past ten years, Watchmen has been adapted to a movie, received prequel series and soon will possibly be a show on HBO. However Damon Lindelof has made some interesting comments regarding the show. Prepare for a rant coming up, read further on for my thoughts on Watchmen on HBO.
This Is A Bad Idea
I’m sorry, I normally don’t like to be the guy shitting on the product before something comes out but I need to get this off my chest. Setting this Watchmen story in the modern day defeats the message of the story. Even though the setting is 1985, the events that occur within the series are even more relevant today. Adding Donald Trump, Vladamir Putin, and any other demented world leader would add nothing to the mythos that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons created. What’s worse is that this series won’t even be featuring any of the characters from the actual Watchmen comic.
Instead it’ll be a cast of brand new characters. Why even call it Watchmen, when you’re barely going to touch anything related to the actual book? If you wanted to create a TV series based around current events that somehow involved superheroes, why not use your own instead of tying into one of the greatest comics of the modern era? I understand that as a writer that you don’t want to strictly adapt something, because at the end of the day it’s not your voice. However Zach Synder already proved that you can bring your unique voice while still trying to remain faithful to the source material.
However what really pisses me of is quote that Lindelof made comparing his Watchmen series and the original series “Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted. They will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along, it did not erase what came before it.”
I’m sorry but that quote is the sign of a writer who is so far up their own ass, they can practically see out their throat. No matter the quality of Lindelof’s Watchmen TV show, it will never compare to the original. It will never be the as good as the original. After these statements made I refuse to watch this series.
