Spinning out of a the current Black Panther series Marvel Comics has officially announced a new ongoing series staring Black Panther, Luke Cage, Storm, Misty Knight and Manifold to be set in Harlem. The series will be written by current Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coats & Yona Harvey with art by Butch Guice. Read further on for my thoughts on the upcoming series.
While I’m not that excited for this series, in this current political climate Marvel needs to put out a book like this, it also helps that Ta-Nehesis Coats and Yona Harvey are both African Americans who can bring a level of realism that most of the current writers of Marvel can’t bring. Some of fans of Marvel might say that Marvel shouldn’t make a book political, then I remind them of the famous cover of Captain America punching Hitler in the face and I will ask you to politely sit back down.
From a business standpoint putting all these characters together makes perfect sense. Last year Black Panther stole the show in the tent pole film Captain America: Civil War and Netflix’s audiences fell in love with Luke Cage and Misty Knight. Adding one of the most iconic female Marvel heroes of all time in Storm is a nice added bonus (although it will create some interesting tension between her and Black Panther) and Manifold from Secret Warriors brings in that new blood to this group of well established heroes.
Even though I want a more nuanced approach with this series, this book is still part of the Marvel Universe. It needs to have some connective tissue at least it does for me. I’m not saying it has to constantly make references to every single book on the stand, but the occasional guest character who isn’t just a humanoid will do just fine.
