Do you love Doctor Strange? Are you currently reading the ongoing Doctor Strange series? Do you want more Doctor Strange in your life? Well with 2018 right around the corner, Marvel has officially announced Doctor Strange Damnation, a even that begins in February that centers around the good doctor. Read further on for my thoughts on this new “event” from Marvel comics.
Right out of the gate, I kinda despise that this “event” will be a separate mini series that will run along side the current Doctor Strange series. Given that this series will tackle the aftermath of Hydra Steve nuked Las Vegas, it seems that this event could have easily be done within the pages of Doctor Strange with no other series needed. Especially when you factor in that outside of Doctor Strange Marvel is only publishing one other title that’s mystic (Spirits of Vengeance) and that could have easily run side by side with Doctor Strange or it could have been a classic crossover between the two titles.
I’m just baffled that Nick Spencer is co-writing this event since this would be his first actual gig writing Doctor Strange and it just doesn’t feel right to me. I understand that this event will center around the fallout of Secret Empire, but honestly Donny Cates should be writing this writing this by himself. Part of me believes that Marvel doesn’t quite believe in Cates being able to move the meter on books but with Spencer co-writing it could boost the sales of this mini series. I’m sure the collaboration between the two will be great, it’s just weird to me seeing Nick Spencer writing a Doctor Strange story.
Last but not least we have Rod Reis on pencils for this “event” and this aspect has me the most excited. His style is perfectly suited for the mystical characters of the Marvel Universe, his art feels ethereal. I’m super excited that Marvel is giving Rod Reis more high profile work.
