You know everyday I whisper to myself “man everything is getting an adaptation.” We are living in the golden age of comic books come to life, and now I can personally scratch another one of my list. Coming in 2018 The Umbrella Academy by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba come to Netflix in a ten episode live action series. My brain needs to comprehend all this news. Read further on to find out my thoughts on this subject.
Honestly if you would have told me that The Umbrella Academy would get a live action TV series, I would have called you crazy. Simply because of how outlandish some of the beautiful visuals that the two volumes encompass. I’ve yearned for an animated series about this weird group of individuals only because I believed it to be impossible to capture the spirit of this series in live action form. Now while I remain skeptical as to what the show will look like, given Netflix’s track record my inner cynic isn’t screaming.
Not much is known about the show at this time, but we do know the show runner will be Steve Blackman. If you aren’t familiar with that name, you might be familiar with the hit show Fargo. I haven’t watched the second season of Fargo just yet but I can say the first season was some of the best TV I’ve watched in quite some time. So while The Umbrella Academy will be different in tone to Fargo but one can’t argue that he won’t produced a great show. My last thought on this, is how are they going to tell the story of Umbrella Academy. If you’re not aware the Umbrella (at the time of this post) has only two volumes produced, they’re are plans for a third and fourth installment but given Gerard Way’s schedule and current workload at DC a new volume isn’t on the horizon. Will they format the first season after the first graphic novel? Or combine both volumes into one season? Are you excited for a live action Umbrella Academy series? Let me know in the comments below!
