Mister Marvel Leaves For DC Comics

by | Nov 9, 2017

Can you feel it? In a year full of absurd news, it seems that even the world of comics wants to be apart of it. In news that shocked comic book fans Brian Michael Bendis leaves Marvel and heads to DC Comics. In all my years of covering comic book news this is one subject I never thought I would write about. Well reality has changed and DC now has one of men who laid the foundation for the modern Marvel Universe. What books should Bendis write? What happens to his current books at Marvel? Read further on for my thoughts on DC’s newest writer.

In case you only started reading comics recently, you may not understand the magnitude of Bendis leaving Marvel for DC. Bendis wrote the definitive Spider-Man for over fifteen years (which also inspired two feature films) and set the tone for the rest of the Marvel Universe when he became the lead Avengers writer from 2004 to 2012. You may not realize it, but if you read a Marvel comic within the past decade, you’ve read his influence in some fashion. Many are saying that Bendis’s move to DC is akin to when Jack Kirby joined DC in the 1970’s (and created the New Gods). While I haven’t been the biggest supporter of Bendis as of late, I still consider him to be on the great comic book writers of our time. Now the question remains, what should he write at DC?
When I look at this move on paper, I can’t figure out exactly what book fit Bendis the most. When you look at Bendis’s work at the House of Ideas, his most famous works center around street leveled characters with tons of heavy banter. When you look at the DCU, nothing really jumps out as an obvious choice. Many believe that it will Bendis’ first DC story will be a Batman story and while I hope they’re wrong it seems like a Batman book would be the easiest match. I mean Detective Comics is almost at issue 1000 after all. What do you think of Bendis leaving Marvel for DC? What book do you want him to write? Let me know in the comments below.
