I will admit shame on my end, but I have not done enough to celebrate the 100th birthday of Jack “King” Kirby. While Marvel continues to ignore the book that built their house, DC has decided to celebrate the king’s birthday with a a new Mister Miracle from Tom King and Mitch Gerads. What are my thoughts on this announcement? Read further on to find out.
I must confess that I know very little about the fourth world that Jack Kirby created in the 1970’s. While love that characters like The New Gods I’ve only read when they are guest stars in another book. I’m well aware about the origin of Mister Miracle and I firmly believe that he was one of the coolest powers in all of pop culture (yes you read that right, not just comics but pop culture). I wonder if this series will the a launching ground for more New God titles or mini series, given that the preview pages showcasing Orion.
Whenever an obscure series is revived for whatever reason, one thing I always worry about is how accessible it will be to new readers. When you walk into the comic shop or open your comixology app to purchase Mister Miracle #1 you shouldn’t know the answer to whatever Plot Tom King and Mitch Gerard’s have in store but you should be able to have a basic understanding of Mister Miracle (hopefully his relationship with Big Barda) and the world he operates in. Show new readers what makes Mister Miracle different from anything else in the DCU.
Now thankfully the creative team just happens to be one of my favorite comic book writers in Tom King and the very talented Mitch Gerards. Tom King isn’t going to just hand you the story and just go. What I love most about King’s work is his ability to form a story around the strengths of whatever artist he happens to be working with. So even though I’m not well versed in Mister Miracle lore, the creative team is enough for me to try the first issue. What are your thoughts on the new Mister Miracle ongoing?
