Man, if they’re was one film that I thought was never going to get made was the untitled Captain Marvel (now named Shazam). After all for the better part of two years, we only knew that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would play Shazam’s nemesis, and for years we’ve wondered who will be play counterpoint to The Rock. Well ladies and gentlemen DC has their own Captain Marvel. Read further on for my thoughts on this casting news.

Whenever somebody would ask me, “hey did you ever watch the hit NBC show called Chuck?” I would reply “nobody talks like that and no I didn’t. I know that’s pretty blasphemous when you run in nerd circles but nothing about Chuck made me actually want to watch the show. Well….I mean they’re was one reason, but even with that in mind I didn’t watch a single episode of Chuck. The only thing I’ve watched that had Zachary Levi was when he played Fandral in Thor: The Dark World and that was small part so it would be unfair to judge him based on that alone. When I first look at Levi, he doesn’t scream Shazam but after watching comic book movies since 1995 I’ve learned to not judge a book by it’s cover. I can only hope he brings his A game so he’s not outshined by The Rock.
Even though Levi’s casting moves this film project ever forward, we still don’t have a writing team or a director and they’re is no director attached so this film as far as I’m concerned remains stuck in development hell. One critical aspect that is currently being overlooked, who’s going to be young Billy Batson. Yes Levi will have the amazing battle sequences with The Rock, but the heart of the film rest on whoever they cast as Billy Batson. Which direction do they actually go with? I’m pretty sure they won’t go with the cheesy 50’s wholesome aesthetic that Batson/Captain Marvel were known for, but I really don’t want edgy Billy that was introduced into the New 52. I can only hope for a balance. What are your thoughts on this casting? Let me know in the comments below.
